Popson Cards Another Low Round, Leads Cougar Classic

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Lady Vol junior golfer Erica Popson continued her strong performance at the Cougar Classic, recording a three-under 69 performance on Monday during second round action at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, S.C.

Popson helped No. 7 Tennessee move up in the team rankings. With a two-day total of 581, the Big Orange ties for fifth place among 22 teams.

"Erica hits the ball very well and has putted well both days," said Pavon. "She just doesn't make many mistakes which enables her to shoot low scores."

Sophomore Kaitlyn Rohrback (73) also carded a solid effort, shaving three strokes off her first round mark. Junior Sara Monberg heads into round three tied for 32nd after following up an even score Sunday with a three-over 75 Monday.

Wrapping up the Orange and White lineup, sophomore Chessey Thomas is tied for 47th at 75-75=150 (+6), while freshman AJ Newell is tied for 67th with a 76-77=153 (+9) total going into the final round.

We are trying to take some pressure off going into tomorrow," Pavon said. "The girls all want to play so well and they are just getting in their own way a little. We need to focus on one shot at a time and on just hitting good putts."

No. 5 North Carolina vaulted to the lead through 36 holes with a round-two 282 (-6). The Tar Heels have a 567 (-9) total and will take one-stroke lead into Wednesday's final round over second-place Florida (568).

The Lady Vols will tee off at 9am, grouped with SEC foes Vanderbilt, Alabama and Georgia.
