Vols Duo Chasing Medalist Honors

Sept. 26, 2010
Tennessee salvaged a tough team day on the golf course Sunday thanks to a pair of Vols who are challenging for individual honors through 36 holes at the Windon Memorial Classic in Glenview, Ill.
UT's Robin Wingardh and Jay Vandeventer are among a dozen golfers within three strokes of the lead heading into Monday's final 18 holes. Wingardh fired a pair of even-par 71s and sits in a second-place tie, while Vandeventer shot 74-69 to settle into fifth at 1-over-par 143.
The Vols as a team improved by 13 shots from Rounds 1 to 2 and climbed to ninth place. Tennessee opened with a 19-over-par 303 that had UT tied for 13th through Sunday's opening 18 holes. More poor play early in the second round dropped Tennessee to as low as 16th in the 17-team field before things turned around and UT finished with a 4-over 288.
The Vols are at 23-over 591 entering Monday's third round.
Cool and blustery conditions greeted the teams at North Shore Country Club, where temperatures didn't make it out of the 50s and winds were steady between 15 and 20 mph.
Wingardh survived an opening-round double bogey at the par-4 fourth -- his only real trouble of the day. The senior captain carded four birdies on each round and was steady throughout.
Vandeventer's second-round 69 tied his collegiate low, set last year at both the Carpet Capital Collegiate and SEC Championship tournaments. The Bristol sophomore had six birdies against four bogeys in the afternoon session, after recording three birdies over his opening 18 holes.
Justin Walker scored in both rounds for the Vols, shooting 79-75--154 to tie for 70th place. The junior from Greenbrier shaved two strokes off his afternoon score with birdies down the stretch at Nos. 15 and 17.
Darren Renwick mirrored the team results by improving 13 strokes from his first to second rounds. His opening 86 was a collegiate high, but the England junior rallied to shoot 73 in the afternoon and is tied for 83rd place at 17-over 159.
Brandon Rodgers scored in the opening round for Tennessee, shooting 79-81--160 for the day. The freshman is tied for 89th place at 18 over par.
Michigan's Lion Kim tops the leaderboard through 36 holes. His 2-under-par 140 helped Michigan (572) to a two-stroke lead over California (574), which rallied from an opening 301 to shoot 11-under 273 in the afternoon session. Tulsa (578), Ohio State (580) and host Northwestern (580) round out the top five.
Monday's final round begins at 8 a.m. Central time, with temperatures expected to start in the middle 50s and rise to a high of 66 by afternoon under sunny skies. Tennessee opens from the No. 1 tee alongside Minnesota and Purdue.
