KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - With six days of practice under its belt, the University of Tennessee baseball team will open play in its annual Orange and White World Series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Volunteers were divided into two teams via a draft earlier this week. The White squad will be guided by pitching coach Jason Beverlin, while infielders coach Ash Lawson will lead the Orange team. All seven games will be played no matter the series outcome. Fans are encouraged to attend and attendance is free.
The first three games of the series will take place at 5 p.m. on Sept. 17, Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, respectively. The fourth contest is set to begin at 4 p.m. on Oct. 3. Following a 12-day break, the series will continue at 5 p.m. on Oct. 15 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 17. The seventh and final game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Oct. 22.
Junior southpaw Steven Gruver will get the start for Beverlin's squad on Friday, while redshirt freshman Andy Hillis will take to the hill for Lawson.
Heading the White squad are senior outfielder Josh Liles, junior short stop Zach Osborne and junior outfielder Charley Thurber. Other position players available to Beverlin include junior second baseman Chris Pierce, first baseman Davis Morgan and a quartet of catchers in junior Wes Walker, sophomores Andy Yates and Hooper Paty and freshman Blake Berger.
Beverlin's pitching corp, meanwhile, features five right-handers and four lefties, including Gruver. The other eight hurlers are seniors Rob Catapano and D.J. Leffler, juniors Levi Dean and Jerod Peper, sophomores Zach Godley, Nick Blount and Kevin Greene and redshirt freshman Jon Reed.
On the other side of the diamond, senior infielders Matt Duffy, Khayyan Norfork and Tyler Horne will be leading the charge for the Orange team. Rounding out the remainder of Lawson's position players are junior catcher Adam King, sophomores Chris Fritts and Zeth Stone, freshman outfielder Andrew Toles and a trio of rookie backstops in Ethan Bennett, Ryan Gallardo and Hunter Mitchem.
Set to take the mound for Lawson are juniors Matt Ramsey, Josh Allman and T.J. Thornton, sophomores Drew Steckenrider and Hunter Daniel and freshmen Nick Williams and Carter Watson.
