Auburn Takes Game Two to Even Series Against Tennessee

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn scored early and often on Saturday as it cruised to an 18-0 win over the University of Tennessee baseball team (29-22, 12-14 Southeastern Conference) at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala. The Tigers (34-17, 16-10) clinched a berth in the SEC Tournament and evened the series against the Volunteers with the victory.
"I don't really know what to say, but a loss is a loss," UT Head Coach Todd Raleigh said. "It doesn't matter if it is 1-0 or 18-0, we have to try to win every game that we possibly can. I thought we hit the ball a lot harder than three hits, but they made some good plays and did everything well today. You have to give Auburn credit. We've done a good job of bouncing back after some tough losses this year, so I don't anticipate a let-down tomorrow. We still have a chance to win the series and control our own destiny."
A day after launching three home runs and scoring nine runs in the series opener, UT was only able to manage three hits, getting a double from Cody Hawn and singles from Matt Duffy and Chris Fritts. Auburn starter Cole Nelson recorded the win, tossing a complete-game shutout with two walks and three strikeouts.
Auburn scored all of its runs in the first five innings before three different Tennessee relievers were finally able to stop the bleeding. Sophomore Dylan Hochevar was the first Vol pitcher to find any success, twirling two scoreless frames, yielding just three hits and striking out one. Freshmen Alan Walden and Drew Steckenrider then held the Tigers off the board in the final two innings.
The Orange and White has had success after big losses this season, as it is 4-1 in games after losing by five or more runs. It has also been strong in Sunday contests, having won eight this season, including four to clinch SEC series wins.
Taking a page from Tennessee's book after it used a three-run, first-inning home run to jump out to an early lead on Friday, Auburn turned the tables on Saturday, scoring five in the bottom of the first on five hits, four of which went for extra bases. Trent Mummey hit a two-run home run, Ryan Jenkins knocked in a run with a single and Dan Gamache doubled in another run.
After the Vols were unable to take advantage of a leadoff double by Cody Hawn in the second inning, the Tigers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Mummey's second home run of the game, a grand slam that just cleared the wall in right.
From there, the hits just kept coming as Auburn scored four times in the fourth on a trio of doubles and a two-run shot by Fletcher, his second of the game. The Tigers then tacked on two more in the fifth with a pair of doubles and two singles before being held off the board over the final three innings.
Tennessee will look for its fourth straight SEC series win at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday when it sends junior southpaw Bryan Morgado (2-6, 7.03) to the mound.
