KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis player Brynn Boren was named Lady Vol Athlete of the Week on Tuesday morning, capping an impressive week for the freshman.
Boren captured both the singles and doubles titles at the 2010 USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional, earning her a spot in the singles and doubles draws of the 2010 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, to be held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. from Nov. 4-7.
In doubles play, she and partner Maria Sorbello breezed through the field, winning each of their five matches by at least three games. In the finals, they toppled teammates Rosalía Alda and Millie Nichols, 8-2.
Boren's run through the singles field was equally impressive. She knocked off three of the top four seeds in the tournament, including a three-set win over top seed No. 27-ranked Jackie Wu of Vanderbilt. Boren toppled Vandy's Chelsea Preeg (No. 58 nationally) to secure a trip to the singles final.
In the final against teammate Rosalía Alda, she lost the first set, 6-4, and trailed 5-4 in the second. Facing a match point, Boren was able to fight back to break Alda's serve and eventually take the set, 7-5. From there, she brought home the final set, 6-2.
This marks the second time in four weeks that Lady Vol tennis has captured Lady Vol Athlete of the Week honors. Rosalía Alda and Millie Nichols shared the award on Sept. 27 after capturing doubles title in the top flight at the 2010 Furman Fall Classic.
A freshman from Laguna Niguel, Calif., Boren earned the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week award over Chanelle Price (Cross Country), Chelsea Hatcher (Soccer), Kelsey Floyd (Swimming and Diving) and Nikki Fowler (Volleyball). Price spurred the Lady Vols to their best team finish of the season, a fourth-place effort at the Front Runner Invitational in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Saturday, while Floyd accounted for a meet-high 40 points in Tennessee's 171-129 win over Arkansas on Saturday. Fowler averaged 4.0 kills per set and hit at a spectacular .465 clip with a squad-best 24 kills as Tennessee swept past SEC rivals Mississippi State and Alabama. Hatcher netted three total goals in matches at No. 12 Florida and No. 13 South Carolina.
