Vols Place Third at Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge

The Tennessee men's cross country team ran to a third-place finish Saturday at the Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge in Williamsburg, Va. The Vols placed all five scoring runners in the top 35 and finished with a total of 71 points. William & Mary won the meet with 32 points, and Michigan State placed second with 39 points.
Senior Andrew Press led the Vols with a third-place individual finish in a time of 25:05.5. Ben Massam of William & Mary won the race with a time of 24:57.2
"We had a mixed set of results today," Tennessee head coach George Watts said. "Andrew Press led us again and ran well. Michael Spooner made some improvements and was also in the hunt to win the race. We missed Steve Tobin, who was a little under the weather. He could have moved us up and given us a chance at second place."
Following Press was sophomore Michael Spooner in sixth with a time of 25:11.0. Junior Mike Brodsky finished 20th in a time of 25:52.0, and he was followed by freshman Chris Bodary in 27th with a 26:04.5 finish. The final Vol to post a score for the team was freshman Ryan Beabout, who finished 33rd in a time of 26:25.2
"The two freshmen came on strong today and moved into our top five," Watts said. "They did a good job running a tough, competitive race on a difficult course, as did several of our other runners."
Junior Chris Kane and sophomore David Clabo rounded out the top seven for the Vols. Kane placed 38th in a time of 26:44.6 and Clabo crossed the line 43rd in 26:54.8.
Tennessee next competes at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic on Oct. 4. That meet is held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park and will begin at 9:30 a.m. ET.
