UT Announces 2008 XC Schedule

The Tennessee cross country team released its 2008 schedule Tuesday highlighted by a season-opening meet and three other regular-season races. The NCAA South Regional will also be held in Knoxville and hosted by the University of Tennessee.
???I feel like we have another competitive schedule,??? cross country coach George Watts said. ???Each year, we look to add a different meet to the slate. This year, we thought the Colonial Interregional at William & Mary would be a good addition. The objective is to create a regular season that prepares the athletes for the postseason, and I feel like we have a schedule that will do that.???
The Vols open the season by hosting the 8K UT Invitational on Sept. 19. The meet is in its 11th year and is held at Lambert Acres Golf Club.
Tennessee then takes a week off before traveling to Williamsburg, Va., for the 8K Colonial Interregional Challenge on Sept. 27. Oct. 4, the Vols visit Louisville, Ky., for the 8K Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
The Vols last regular-season meet is the ISU Pre-Nationals on Oct. 18 in Terre Haute, Ind. The race is designed to give competitors a glimpse at the NCAA Championship course and features a level of competition similar to that of the national championships. It takes place Oct. 18 at the Wabash Family Sports Center.
The SEC Championships are Nov. 3 in Starkville, Miss. Tennessee has finished fourth at the league championship each of the last three years.
Following the conference meet, Tennessee hosts the 10K NCAA South Regional on Nov. 15. The Vols will want to improve on their eighth-place finish last season in Gainesville, Fla., and advance to the national championship race nine days later.
???I think the highlight of our schedule is hosting a regional for the third time in seven years,??? Watts said. ???It provides us an edge. We have traditionally run well at home because of not having to travel and our familiarity with the course.???
The 10K NCAA Championship takes place on Nov. 24 at the Wabash Family Sports Center.
