Alda Claims Texas Summer Grand Slam Title

COLLEGE STATION, Texas. ??? Less than a month after completing her first season on the University of Tennessee women???s tennis team, rising sophomore Rosal??a Alda posted a dominating performance at the Texas Summer Grand Slam this past weekend, dropping just one set en route to claiming the singles title at Texas A&M's Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
The Round Rock, Texas, native also teamed up with Alexandra Adams to reach the semifinals of the doubles draw before bowing out against the top-seeded duo of Vanderbilt recruit Heather Steinbauer and Illinois signee Amy Allin.
Alda, seeded ninth in the competition, opened up singles play with a perfect, 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sydney Bell in the Round of 64 before taking out Rutgers commit Leonora Slatnick, 7-5, 6-1, and fifth-seeded Charlotte Calhoun, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals where she defeated the fourth-seeded Steinbauer, 6-1, 6-2.
In the semifinals, Alda suffered her lone setback of the tournament, dropping the first set against top-seeded Lilly Kimbell, before roaring back to pick up a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 triumph. She then wasted little time in the championship match, easily dispatching of No. 2-seeded Hideko Tachibana in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to stake claim to the singles title.
During her rookie campaign at Rocky Top, Alda posted an impressive 18-13 singles record, including 12 victories during dual-match play. The Lady Vols finished their 2008 slate with a 5-10 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th consecutive season.
