Abbott and Schutzler Invited to Olympic Selection Camp
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. ??? The list of 32 invitees for the USA Softball Women???s National Team selection camp (September 10-14) in Chula Vista, Calif., have been announced and two former Tennessee Lady Vols, pitcher Monica Abbott and outfielder Lindsay Schutzler, are among a group that will be bidding for historic spots on the prestigious squad for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The opportunity for a gold medal at the 2008 games will be the last until at least 2016 as the sport of softball was eliminated from the slate of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.
Abbott and the 2007 USA Softball Women???s National Team just completed one of its most dominant summers in recent history. The squad posted a perfect 20-0 record on its way to three gold medals that included their second World Cup title, sixth consecutive Pan Am gold medal and the top position at the Canada Cup. During those three events, the Red, White and Blue outscored their opponents 164-4 while posting a batting average of .426. The pitching staff held opponents to a .115 batting average. At the XV Pan Am Games, the last competition of the summer, the USA posted a 4-0 record on their way to their eighth overall Pan American gold medal.
