NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team was honored Wednesday by the Tennessee State Legislature for winning the 2007 NCAA women's basketball tournament. The Big Orange finished the season 34-3 and claimed a seventh national championship.
The travel party was called into the house and entered to a standing ovation.
Speaker of the House Jimmy Naifeh drafted the proclamation in honor of the Lady Vols. Chief clerk Berney Durham read the resolution aloud. He and others complemented head coach Pat Summitt on her leadership, character and representation of both the university and the state of Tennessee. Others commended members of the team for their dedication to school work, character and good sportsmanship.
Lady Vol Athletic Director Joan Cronan received a standing ovation for her dedication to serving the community and helping to improve opportunities for women in sports.
Summitt, the 2007 team and each individual player all received proclamations. Formal copies of the proclamations and an orange rose were presented to each player at the front of the room.
The team and Summitt signed autographs to fans after the session.
The Lady Vols claimed their seventh NCAA title on April 3 with a 59-46 over Rutgers. Tennessee returns four starters and three additional valuable members for next year's squad. Joining the seven returnees are four incoming freshmen.
