The Tennessee men???s cross country team scored 178 points for an eighth-place finish at the 10K NCAA South Regional in Gainesville, Fla.
???It was a disappointing performance today,??? head coach George Watts said. ???We weren???t the same team we were at the SEC Championship. We have to learn how to better prepare for back-to-back championship races.???
Knoxville native Andrew Press led the Vols with his 24th-place, 31:37.88 finish. The junior All-SEC performer has led Tennessee in the last five races after he was the second Vol across the finish line at the season-opening 8K Covered Bridge Open. He is the first Vol to lead the team in five consecutive races since 2005 when All-America Zach Sabatino led the team in six straight to finish the season.
Junior Steve Tobin was the next Vol across the line as he completed the 10,000-meter course in 32:00.32 for 34th place two weeks after earning All-SEC acclaim. Knoxville native Denton Jones finished 38th in 32:12.82 and Michael Spooner, who ran to a spot on the All-SEC freshman team at the 8K SEC Championship, placed 44th in 32:24.85. Press, Tobin, Jones and Spooner finish the season as the only Vol runners to score in each of Tennessee???s six races this season.
Team captain Yarrick Kincaid rounded out the scoring for Tennessee for the second time in the last three races as he finished in 51st place after navigating the course in 32:35.60. Sophomore Chris Rapp stopped the clock in 33:22.28 and finished 70th in the field of 134 competitors.
Alabama scored 28 points to win the region, and the Crimson Tide were followed by Florida State in second with 52 points. Florida placed third with 82 points, with Belmont coming in fourth with 121. Mississippi State rounded out the top five after scoring 135 points.
