VOLS FINISH SECOND IN SEASON-OPENING RACE

The Tennessee men's cross country team scored 60 points Friday at the 5K UTC Invitational to finish second. The Vols ranked behind Alabama's 22 points in the race, which was contested at the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute in Chattanooga.
"I thought we had a good opening meet," head coach George Watts said. "Everyone performed at the level of fitness that we are at this early in the season. I was really happy with our spread of 23 seconds, which is something that I hope will continue through the rest of the season. We will add a few more guys into the mix next week at home, so we anticipate being a little bit stronger in our next competition.
The five Vols that scored finished sixth through 21st to make up the team score. Sophomore Denton Jones led Tennessee across the line, finishing sixth overall in 15:05. He was followed by senior Nate Jansen finishing the course in 16:00 for ninth place and freshman Greg Thomas in 11th with a time of 16:03. Yarrick Kincaid scored in 13th place with his time of 16:08, and Chris Kane rounded out the scoring for Tennessee with his 21st place, 16:17 finish.
Rich Bonilla finished 24th in 16:24, followed by Chris Raff behind him in 25th with a time of 16:30. Mike Brodsky finished 29th in 16:40 and Steve Tobin finished 30th in 16:41.
Tennessee will return to the course next Friday as it hosts the UT Invitational. The 8.4K race will be held at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville and is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m.
