The Tennessee men's cross country team starts its season Friday in Chattanooga at the 5K UTC Invitational. Seven Division-I schools will be among the competitors running the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute course, which is the shortest course on Tennessee's schedule this season. The Vols will be joined by SEC members Alabama and Auburn, along with Belmont, Samford, MTSU and Tennessee State.
"We are looking forward to getting started this season," head coach George Watts said. "We will more than likely hold out some of our upperclassmen to give the freshmen a chance to get their feet wet in their first collegiate competition.
Ten of the 19 runners on this year's roster are scheduled to compete for Tennessee. Junior Yarrick Kincaid leads the Vols into their season-opening meet. Sophomore Steve Tobin and junior Brent Smith are the other Vols from last year's team expected to compete. Senior Nate Jansen makes his return to the team after taking a year off from competition.
Sophomore Denton Jones, as well as freshmen Richie Bonilla, Michael Brodsky, Chris Kain, Christopher Rapp and Greg Thomas, are all expected to make their Tennessee debut Friday.
The men's race is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. eastern time, following the women's race at 5:45.
