Sept. 13, 2006
The Tennessee men's cross country team will play host to the UT Invitational on Friday at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville. The 8.4K UT Invitational is the first of two home meets for the Vols this season, with the South Regional championship race also being hosted by Tennessee in November.
"We are looking forward to our meet this weekend," head coach George Watts said. "It is always nice to run at home and we look forward to having a good crowd at the meet.
"This is our ninth season of hosting our home meets at Lambert Acres Golf Club. We appreciate their continued support. It's a great course and a beautiful setting for a cross country race. We have some very fine teams scheduled to compete and expect some strong competition. This meet allows teams to run on the site of the NCAA South Regional championship course. This will give our young guys their first opportunity to race the course prior to the Nov. 11 championship.
Newly-elected captain Tyler DeVault will make his season debut for the Vols at the UT Invitational. Seniors Jeff Day, Ben Lukowski, Dusty Miller and Chris Platt, along with junior Matt Piccarello, will also run for the first time this season. Sophomore Denton Jones, who paced the Vols last week with his sixth-place overall finish at the 5K UTC Invitational, joins the upperclassmen on the start line for the Vols.
Richie Bonilla, Michael Brodsky, Nate Jansen, Chris Kane, Yarrick Kincaid, Chris Rapp, Greg Thomas and Steve Tobin will complete Tennessee's team for Friday's race.
The Vols will be joined on the course by nine other teams trying to get a feel for the regional championship course. Georgia Tech, Louisville, Tennessee-Chattanooga, Austin Peay, Belmont, Maryville College, VMI, Georgia State and Bryan College will compete Friday night.
The men's race is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m. EDT, preceded by the women's 5K race at 5:30.
