CHARLESTON, S.C. - Tennessee shot a one-over 289 in the final round of the Cougar Classic to finish with a third-place 876 total, just three strokes from the top of the leaderboard. The Lady Vols shook off an opening-round 299 eighth-place standing to come back later in the day and shoot an even-par 288 in yesterday's opening 36-hole marathon.
"Even though we are disappointed in third, I am very pleased with the way the team played the last two rounds," said head coach Judi Pavon.
Junior Marci Turner totaled an even-par 216, which put her in a tie for fifth after ending round one with a 3-over-par 75 and in a tie for 34th. The defending Cougar Classic individual champion tied her career-low 67 in the second round to catapult herself into a third-place tie.
In the final 18 holes, sophomore Nicole Smith fired a career-low 69, with the help of seven birdies, for the second time since joining the Orange and White. Smith redeemed herself after a first-round 77 by carding a one-under-par 71 in round two before ending the tournament with the 3-under-par 69.
"Marci, Nicole and Angela played very well after some first round jitters," said Pavon. "Nicole caught fire out there and was 6-under in an 8-hole stretch. She helped us pull very close to the lead, but we just couldn't get the last few putts to drop."
In her first collegiate tournament, freshman Angela Oh carded nine birdies over three rounds and ended with a 2-under-par 70 to bring her total to 218. The former Junior Ryder Cup member finished in a tie for 11th with a total of 218.
Senior Holly Cantwell couldn't manage to equal her first-round 72, and ended in a tie for 32nd overall (72-77-76=225). Freshman Diana Cantú, playing as an individual, finished tied-39th (74-78-75=227), while her classmate Ginny Brown tied for 80th (80-82-79=241).
The Lady Vols will return to the links on Sept. 22-24 when they head down to Florida to compete in the Fall Preview. Traditionally, the Fall Preview is held at the same course as the NCAA tournament, to give golfers the opportunity to see what to expect in May. UT will join 17 of the top golf programs in the country on the LPGA International Course.
