VOLS ANNOUNCE 2006 CROSS COUNTRY SCHEDULE

The Tennessee men's cross country team, coming off an appearance at the 2005 NCAA Championships, released its 2006 schedule Wednesday.
"We have a competitive schedule this year," head cross country coach George Watts said. "We are looking forward to hosting the regional as well.
The Vols run at home twice this season, hosting the 8.4K pre-regional UT Invitational on Sept. 15 and the 10K South Regional championship meet on Nov. 11. All home meets are contested at Lambert Acres Golf Club in Maryville.
Tennessee opens the season Sept. 8 at the 5K UTC Invitational at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute in Chattanooga. After hosting the UT Invitational, the Vols will take a week off before traveling to Louisville, Ky., Sept. 30 for the 8K Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
After another open week, Tennessee will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., for the 8K Brooks Pre-Nationals meet at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center, which will also serve as the site for the NCAA Championship. Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge, La., will serve as the SEC championship course on Oct. 28.
After the conference meet, the Vols will host the South Regional Championship. Tennessee hosted the South Regional in 2002, and the Vols won the team title. The cross country regional marks the second NCAA championship event held in Knoxville in 2006. The track and field Mideast Regional was contested at Tom Black Track on Tennessee's campus in May.
The cross country season concludes Nov. 20 with the 10K NCAA Championship in Terre Haute. Last season, the Vols finished 28th as a team after gaining an at-large bid following a fourth-place finish in the South Regional. Tennessee has been represented at the NCAA Championships by a team or an individual in all but three seasons since 1971.
