OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - With an NCAA Championships berth on the line, 21 schools will converge on Melton Hill Lake for the 10th annual NCAA Central/South Region Sprints, sponsored by Aramark, on Saturday and Sunday. Tennessee will be competing against eight First Eight shells ranked in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing Top 20 poll. Events begin each day at 9 a.m. at the Oak Ridge Boat House.
The Lady Vols have five boats entered into races set for this weekend. Two Varsity 8+ shells will compete in the First and Second Eights, while UT will have one entry each in the Varsity 4+, the Open 4+ and the Novice 8+.
Strong once again, the field features eight First Eights teams ranked in the top 20, including No. 4 Ohio State, No. 6 Michigan, No. 9 Minnesota, No. 10 Notre Dame, No. 14 Michigan State, No. 15 Virginia, No. 19 UCF and No. 20 Wisconsin. Also participating in the weekend's events are Central Region teams Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas and Kansas State along with South Region squads Clemson, Duke, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, Southern Methodist and Texas.
Last year, Virginia (372) claimed its second consecutive overall title, topping Ohio State (366) by six points. The Buckeyes and Cavaliers claimed automatic berths in the NCAA Championships by virtue their region titles. Michigan (327), Wisconsin (324) and Tennessee (304) rounded out the top five overall. UT's fifth-place showing overall and second-place finish in the South Region represented new high marks for the program.
Results will be posted at the end of each day on row2k.com and utladyvols.com. Results may also be found on the Oak Ridge Rowing Association website, orra.org.
