ROCKFORD PEACH CARTHA DOYLE TO THROW OUT FIRST PITCH SATURDAY

The #2 ranked Lady Vol Softball team will open Southeastern Conference play this weekend with a home series versus #18 Auburn at Tennessee Field in Tyson Park. Knoxville native and current resident of Maryville, TN Cartha Doyle will throw out the first pitch on Saturday, March 18 for the double-header starting at 1 p.m.
Born and raised in Knoxville, Tennessee, Cartha Doyle began playing fast pitch recreational league softball at the age of 13. After honing her skills for a few years, she took her abilities to the national level, and made the Rockford Peaches of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. This team and league were made famous by the movie "A League of their Own." Cartha joined the team in 1947 at the young age of 17 years old. She then earned the starting spot of 2nd Baseman as a rookie.
"That was one of the most proud moments in my life," stated Doyle.
After her playing years finished Cartha, still an avid fan softball, continued to umpire the game from 1972-1982 and also coached fast-pitch & slow-pitch teams in recreation leagues.
Cartha's family has a heritage around the Knoxville area. The names South Doyle Middle & South Doyle High School are derived from family member Mildred Doyle.
All home softball games are played at Tennessee Field located in Tyson Park. Admission prices are $5 for adults and $3 for youth ages 18 and under.
