FORMER LADY VOL RETAMOZA PLAYING FOR WORLD AMATEUR TEAM TITLE

STELLENBOSCH, South Africa - Former Lady Vol golfer Violeta Retamoza, competing for her native Mexico in the World Amateur Team Championship in Stellenbosch, South Africa, stands tied for 49th place at six-over-par after two rounds in the prestigious event held at Stellenbosch Golf Club.
Following an opening-round 77 (+5), Retamoza settled down in Thursday's second round, firing a one-over-par 73 to climb to 49th after sitting in 66th position after Wednesday's first round.
After opening her second round with bogeys on three of her first six holes, the Aguascalientes, Mexico, native was two under par the rest of the way with birdies coming at Nos. 8 and 11.
As a team, Mexico stands tied for 22nd at 11-over, 22 shots behind host and tournament leader South Africa. Retamoza's teammates, Tanya Dergal and Lili Alvarez, are 45th (+5) and 72nd (+9), respectively.
The World Amateur Team Championship is golf's biggest international event with 48 women's teams competing for the title. The championships are contested over 72 holes of stroke play for teams consisting of three players. After the completion of the four rounds, the team with the lowest combined score wins the prestigious Espirito Santo Trophy.
Retamoza enters international play after completing an outstanding career at Tennessee. While at UT, she garnered All-American nods in 2003 and 2005 and compiled three All-Southeastern Conference awards. In her freshman campaign, Retamoza became the third Lady Vol to be named SEC Freshman of the Year. She was selected as the SEC Player of the Year and SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2005.
