KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - For the first time in her career, senior Blakeley Griffith has been named Lady Vol Athlete of the Week. The award comes following her stellar performance at the ITA Southeast Region Indoor Championships where she claimed the singles title and reached the quarterfinals in doubles play. She now has a 10-1 singles record during the fall tournament season, including seven straight victories.
With the singles championship, the Middleburg, Va., product earned an automatic berth into the main draw at the ITA National Indoor Championships to be held in Columbus, Ohio, from Nov. 2-5. She defeated No. 96 Anastasia Zhukova of Chattanooga, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, on Monday morning to claim the title. The victory marked her fourth in five attempts against a ranked opponent this season.
In doubles action, Griffith teamed up with freshman Zsofia Zubor to reach the quarterfinal round. The duo won three of its four matches on the weekend to move their overall fall record to 8-2.
UT will be in action next when it travels to Peachtree City, Ga., to take part in the SEC Coaches Classic from Nov. 2-5. Griffith will head to Columbus, Ohio, that same weekend to compete at the ITA National Indoor Championships.
