The Tennessee men's cross country team finished 19th in the blue race of the 8K Brooks Pre Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday. The Vols' scored 530 points in the race, which featured 36 teams and was contested on the LaVern Gibson Championship Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
"We ran a little below our best," head coach George Watts said. "In a competition like we were in today, you can not afford to run at the level we ran today and expect to have a successful result. Tyler DeVault had a solid performance as our number one man. Our spread of 40 seconds was unacceptable, especially in a meet of this magnitude. We have a lot to look forward to. We will bounce back from this race and get ready for the SEC Championship.
Captain Tyler DeVault led Tennessee to the finish line with his personal-best 8K time of 24:27.9 and 49th-place finish. He was followed by fellow seniors Ben Lukowski, Nate Jansen and Jeff Day. Lukowski finished 99th with a season-best 8K time of 24:52.7. Jansen crossed the line 114th in a season-best 8K time of 24:56.9 and Day finished 129th with his time of 25:02.6. Sophomore Denton Jones rounded out the scoring for the Vols, clocking a personal-best 8K time of 25:07.7 to finish 139th.
Colorado took the team title in the blue race, finishing with 75 points. The Buffaloes were followed by Florida State (141 points), North Carolina State (152 points), UC Santa Barbara (229 points) and Georgetown (274 points).
Matt Piccarello finished 149th overall in the blue race, which featured 243 runners, with his time of 25:12.7. Yarrick Kincaid led Tennessee in the open race, finishing the course in 25:27.9 to lower his personal-best 8K time and finish 54th. Freshman Greg Thomas also recorded a personal-best 8K time with his 25:48.9, 92nd-place finish. Richie Bonilla finished 210th in 27:55.1 and Chris Rapp crossed the finish line 220th in 29:58.1.
