KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Kentucky freshman forward Giuleana Lopez scored in the 18th minute to give Kentucky a 1-0 victory over No. 11 Tennessee in front of 678 spectators at the Regal Soccer Stadium on Friday night. The win moves the Wildcats to 8-5-2 on the year and 3-2-1 in the Southeastern Conference, while Tennessee falls to 7-4-3 and 3-2-2 in the league.
Lopez got the lead ball from junior midfielder Kelsey Fenix and sprinted past the Tennessee defense, pushing a shot past UT sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Kitchin (Crofton, Md.) for the only goal in the contest.
Tennessee had opportunities early in the first half after getting two corner kicks in the first 10 minutes. The initial drive into the box by redshirt freshman forward Mick Imgram (Clifton, Va.) in the third minute was headed towards the net by junior defender Jordan Falcusan (Plymouth, Mich.), but her chance missed high. Imgram got another chance from the corner in the 10th minute, with her ball this time finding senior midfielder Kristen Doukakis (Highlands Ranch, Colo.). However, Doukakis' try missed high as well.
The Lady Vols kept the pressure on after Lopez's goal. Junior forward Emily Redberg (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and sophomore forward Kylee Rossi (Pennington, N.J.) both saw shots miss high within a minute of each other. First, Redberg tried in the 22nd minute after getting the ball from a Sarah Van Sickle (Knoxville, Tenn./Farragut) throw-in, but her chance went over the crossbar. Rossi had an opportunity in the 23rd minute from 16 yards out sail high as well.
The 30th minute saw Redberg get another chance, this time stealing an errant pass between Kentucky defenders. Redberg streaked toward goal and fired from 20 yards out, but Wildcat senior goalkeeper Anne Ogundele made a nice diving stop to her left.
Tennessee had a flurry toward the end of the period, as senior All-American midfielder Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) and Doukakis both had shots stopped in the final minute of the half by Ogundele. Christoph got the ball after an Imgram corner kick and a header back into the box by Falcusan. Her try from inside of 10 yards was blocked by the Wildcats' senior netminder. Doukakis tried to put in the rebound, but Ogundele again was there for the stop.
In the second half, the Lady Vols thought they had tied up the match in the 55th minute, as a blast was put into the back of the net by UT. However, before the shot was fired, the linesman called Tennessee offside, negating the score.
The Lady Vols did not go quietly, as they kept trying to push through the tough Kentucky defense. Rossi tried a shot from the left wing in the 77th minute, but Ogundele was able to make the stop. Four minutes later, Imgram tried to blast one past Ogundele, but, once again, she was there for the save.
The Wildcats nearly added an insurance goal in the 85th minute when sophomore Tara Herold put her direct kick off the crossbar. The ball went down off the bar before spinning away from goal, where Tennessee was able to clear it.
The new Daktronics scoreboard at the Regal Soccer Stadium had Tennessee ahead in most offensive categories, including an 18-3 shot advantage and a 10-2 lead in corner kicks.
"Kentucky finished the great opportunity they had, and the credit goes to them," UT head coach Angela Kelly said. "They were well organized. They figured out a way to finish. To score one goal out of three opportunities is a credit to them. To not have one goal out of our 18 opportunities is something that is very disappointing and something we definitely need to change as we move forward in the conference."
The Lady Vols host Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Regal Soccer Stadium.
