KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Junior Lady Vol tennis player Victoria Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.) earned SEC Player of the Week honors after having a perfect 4-0 weekend, including a defeat of No. 29 Hala Sufi of Purdue on Sunday, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, for the biggest win of her three-year career (as determined by opponent's national ranking). The win in the second singles match was her first victory of 2005-06 over a ranked player.
Jones' other singles victory came by dominating Momei Qu of Illinois, 6-3, 6-0, on Saturday.
In doubles competition, Jones teamed up with fellow junior Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) to record a pair of wins over Illinois' Qu and Emily Wang and Brooke Beier and Randi Schuler of Purdue, both resulting in 8-1 scores.
Tennessee went 2-0 in its two home matches, topping No. 53 Illinois, 6-1, and 42nd-ranked Purdue, 5-2.
Tennessee now plays five straight matches on the road, not returning for a home match until March 3, when UT takes on No. 43 LSU at 5 p.m. The beginning of the month on the road begins at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 with a contest at No. 24 Wake Forest (1-0 entering a match on Saturday versus Charlotte).
