KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Kylee Rossi (Pennington, N.J.) earned dual awards, taking the Southeastern Conference Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week honors, the conference office announced today. Rossi becomes the first Lady Vol to receive the newly-created Freshman of the Week award and is the first soccer athlete to be recognized by the SEC since Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind.) garnered the last of her four selections on Oct. 25, 2004.
Rossi scored the game-winning goal against No. 6 Virginia with 11 seconds to spare to give UT its first victory of the season and down the Cavaliers at Klockner Stadium. The win was the biggest road victory and second-biggest triumph in program history, behind only the 2-0 triumph over fifth-ranked Florida on Oct. 10, 2003. Rossi ranks as the only Lady Vol to score against an Atlantic Coast Conference team this season, as she picked up her only previous goal in the Big Orange's opener against top-ranked North Carolina.
The Orange and White also tied No. 25 William & Mary, 1-1, to go 1-0-1 on the weekend and win the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic, their first regular season tournament championship away from Rocky Top since the 2002 Clemson/Nike Invitational. It was the program's first regular-season event title since taking the 2003 First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic.
Tennessee finished out its non-conference schedule this weekend as they host the 2005 First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic at the Regal Soccer Complex. On Friday, No. 14 Texas A&M takes on Washington at 5:30 p.m. prior to the Orange and White taking on 13th-ranked Stanford at 8 p.m. EDT. Sunday's slate starts with the Cardinal of Stanford against the Aggies of Texas A&M at 12:30 p.m., with UT closing out the tourney against Washington at 3 p.m.
