College of Charleston Head Coach Chandelle Schulte
(opening statement) "I thought it was fantastic. We had been slumping some, and I was hoping during this tournament we would break out and I think the kids did a phenomenal job. I think our one through nine all had a hit except for our number two hitter, and her job is to move the runners, which she did very effectively. We went through the Southern Conference without the player of the year, the pitcher of the year or the freshman of the year, and I felt like it was because our one through nine all do it on a different day, so I'm extremely pleased for them. It was our first time in the tournament and to win the first game against an opponent like Virginia Tech, who I think is exceptional, is really good. We're thrilled, but we're not done."
(on winning the program's first NCAA Tournament game) "I think it means a lot. The College of Charleston has put a lot of financial support behind softball. I think it also represents the Southern Conference very well. We have one or two teams each year that could probably get an at-large bid. It's very important for us to come here and show what the Southern Conference can do. It's huge for us and our recruiting, but I think it's also helpful for the Southern Conference getting at-large bids in the future."
Shondra Schlichenmayer
(on the team's effectiveness against Virginia Tech's pitchers) "I think everybody was seeing the ball. We were confident, and we played this team before so we knew what kind of pitches we'd be seeing. I think everybody was relaxed, and no one was uptight. Usually, it's just one person coming through, but today everybody was playing together. One hit leads to another hit and we get confidence from the person before us."
(on the possibility of facing Tennessee's Monica Abbott in the next round) "I think Abbott is a really good pitcher, but we're feeling confident with our hitters. Knowing that we've faced her before will help us."
Rachael Stern
(on facing Virginia Tech) "I knew I had to get through that first inning, and I was a little nervous at first. I did give up those two runs, but I had solid defense behind me and offensively they're always there to back me up. I had a lot of confidence in myself, and I had all my teammates behind me."
(on whether playing Virginia Tech earlier in the season was helpful) "It was definitely in the back of our minds, and gave us more drive toward the game, but it was at the beginning of the season and we didn't really hit all that well at that time in the year. The coaches have been working with us offensively, defensively and with pitching and it has all come around."
Virginia Tech Head Coach Scot Thomas
(opening statement) "We did not take care of the ball behind our pitchers. We had the opportunity to get out of a few innings and we didn't. Charleston hit the ball well and that is what will happen. Charleston made some nice plays; their right-fielder and third baseman especially. We hit the ball hard at them."
(on Virginia Tech's pitching) "Katie is capable of good ball games. I thought she was throwing well. Missing pop-ups can make any pitcher look bad. We need to be behind her. I thought Angela was doing well. Whether her leg fracture is a problem is something we will need to evaluate tomorrow. As far as her arm is concerned, she did well."
(on the team's performance) "I'm not disappointed in losing to College of Charleston. They are a good team and we knew that coming into the game. It was the way we lost and the way we played behind our pitcher that I am disappointed in."
Angela Tincher
(on recovering from her injury) "It's been a week since I played so I feel like I've had time to recover. I didn't have my best pitches working for me tonight. I didn't have my control."
Sarah Prosise
(on tomorrow's game) "We have to continue to stay positive. This game doesn't mean anything. It is a double elimination tournament."
(on missing a fly ball) "I was running as hard as I could and that was why I slipped. The wet grass was not necessarily a factor."
Stephanie Savre
(on tomorrow's game) "We have to stay positive and come out strong tomorrow. We can do it just like we did last week."
(on her performance tonight) "I just didn't do what I was supposed to tonight."
