TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 18th-ranked University of Tennessee women's tennis team (14-7, 7-4 SEC) heads to Tuscaloosa, Ala. this week for the SEC Championships, held Thurs.-Sun., April 15-18. The Lady Vols, seeded fourth in the tournament, will face either fifth-seeded Georgia or 12th-seeded Auburn on Friday at 10 a.m. Because the tourney's top four seeds all receive first-round byes, UT's initial match will not come until the second day of the tournament, while the Bulldogs and Lady Tigers will clash on Thursday.
Sixth-ranked and fifth-seeded Georgia (13-6, 7-4 SEC) looks to snap a three-match losing streak when it faces Auburn on Thursday. The Bulldogs were upset by the 20th-ranked Lady Vols to close out the regular season on April 16 in Knoxville. Georgia owns a 33-14 career mark at the SEC Tournament, and has claimed three tournament titles in 1983, 1994 and 2001. The Bulldogs are 9-0 against the Lady Vols in tournament matchups.
Auburn (7-13, 0-11 SEC) enters the SEC Tournament as the 12th seed and the only unranked team in the Southeastern Conference. The Lady Vols defeated the Tigers in Auburn, 6-1, on March 4.
Last season at the SEC Tournament, Tennessee also entered as the fourth seed, but fell to fifth seed LSU, 4-3, in the semifinal round.
After returning from the SEC Tournament, Tennessee will prepare for NCAA Regional play, which takes place at various campus sites from May 13-15. This year's NCAA Championships will take place in Athens, Ga., from May 19-28.
