TRINITY, Texas. - The biennial Spirit International Golf Championship came to a close on Saturday afternoon. University of Tennessee senior golfer Violeta Retamoza, one of the four members of Team Mexico, played well throughout the event in helping the squad to a sixth-place finish.
During the final round, the Aguascalientes, Mexico, product had a challenging start but finished strong. She counted toward the team total at nine holes overall, including six of the final eight. Additionally, the 2005 Southeastern Conference Player of the Year added to her birdie amount by pouring in two more on Saturday. Her 72-hole sum of 14 birdies made placed Retamoza in a third-place tie in the unofficial individual standings.
As a team, on the international leaderboard Mexico finished alone in seventh place.
The format of play for the tournament was best-ball competition. Under that setup, each player on the team played his or her own golf ball throughout each round, and at each hole the lowest score (or best ball) counted as the team sum. It was stroke play, with the final cumulative amount serving as team score.
The 2005 Spirit was run by the World Health & Golf Association, a non-profit organization that is supported by a membership program, sponsors and more than 400 volunteers.
Retamoza will return to the collegiate links from Oct. 21-23 as a member of the Lady Volunteer golf squad. Tennessee will be playing host to the ninth-annual Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships.
