Senior Kelly Schweighart's second half goal lifted the 15th-ranked University of Washington Huskies over the eighth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols, 2-1 on Friday, at Husky Stadium in Seattle, Wash.
Senior forward Tina Frimpong took a throw-in from classmate Kelli Smith and out ran the Tennessee defense up the right sideline. Frimpong then crossed to Schweighart who beat junior Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Colo.), to her right for the deciding goal.
"Tina (Frimpong) is the real deal," said Tennessee Head Coach Angela Kelly. "She is a tremendous player that makes their offense click. She created their second goal, and she is really tough to defend."
The Lady Vols sent the game into halftime tied at one, as sophomore Jenny Jeffers (Lake Zurich, Ill.) smashed a 17-yard blast through traffic off of a corner kick by sophomore Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio). Freshman forward Genna Gorman (Lakewood, Colo.) appeared to screen the view of Husky sophomore goalie Kelsey Rasmussen allowing the ball to trickle in at the 21:51 mark to even the score.
Tennessee had a chance to take the lead with less then a minute remaining in the half as Christoph floated a corner kick in front of the Husky net, which appeared to deflect off of a Lady Vol and into the goal. However, the officials ruled a hand ball on the play and the goal was nullified.
"We never really could get into a rhythm," said Kelly. "We had a goal called back and that obviously hurts. Things just didn't go our way tonight. We just have to regroup and get ready for Sunday's match."
Husky junior Nikki Gamble put the Huskies on the board 12:01 into the match, as the senior midfielder corralled a loose rebound at the top of the key, floating a shot just out of the reach of Phillips-Bosshart.
Phillips-Bosshart made 5 saves in the loss, while Rasmussen stopped three Lady Vol shots. Tennessee was out shot by the Huskies 12-11.
The Lady Vols will travel to Pullman, Wash., for a matchup with the Washington State Cougars on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 3 p.m. ET.
