The No. 12/15- ranked (Golf World/Golfweek) Lady Volunteer golf team is headed west to compete in the NCAA Fall Preview Tournament from Sept. 20-22. The tournament will be played in Sunriver, Ore., at the Meadows Course. It is a par-71 course with a length of 6,300 yards. The event features 21 of the premier programs in the nation and serves as a prelude to the NCAA Championships, held in May. UT will tee of Monday at 8 a.m. PDT.
"The Fall Preview is really one of the biggest tournaments of the season," Lady Vol Head Coach Judi Pavon said. "It's a great opportunity to measure yourself against the other top teams in the country early on. Our solid start at the Cougar Classic is a big help coming into this type of tournament because the players have gotten over first tournament nerves and are able to make necessary adjustments in their games. Violeta (Retamoza), Jessica (Shepley) and Golda (Johansson) all had good tournaments last week so they are feeling very confident. Marci (Turner) got her first tournament under belt and got off to a solid start, so she should be more comfortable this week. I'm also looking forward to having Christie (Reed) play and seeing her game in action."
Leading the way for the second-straight week for the Lady Vols will be preseason All-American and runner-up at the Cougar Classic, Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico). Playing in the number two slot is captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario), who got her year off to a solid start with a career-tying effort of 218 at the initial tournament of the year en route to tying for ninth place. Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden) will compete this week for the Big Orange at the Fall Preview with her confidence soaring as the junior shot a career-low 219 to finish in an 11th-place stalemate in Charleston. Freshman Marci Turner (Tompkinsvile, Ky.) will compete for the Lady Vols in her second-consecutive event. The freshman finished tied for 32nd place with a three-day total of 227. The score ties for second-best score in UT history amongst freshmen competing in the initial event of the year. Freshman Christie Reed (Coral Spring, Fla.) will play in her first career collegiate event, earning the number five slot this week for the Big Orange.
Round one of the NCAA Fall Preview will start Monday at 8 a.m. PDT. Round two will commence at the same time on Tuesday, while the final round will begin at 9 a.m. PDT on Wednesday. Complete results can be found by visiting www.golfstatlive.com.
