KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
The seventh-ranked University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers will travel north to First Market Stadium in Richmond, Va., for a 7 p.m. match up with the Spiders. UT sports a 2-1-1 record entering the match.
Vaulted by a dramatic weekend in which the team pitched a shutout versus the top-ranked team in the nation, then easily handled the Women of Troy, 2-1, the Lady Vols rose from 17th in the NSCAA/addidas poll to number seven in the nation, matching its highest ranking in school history attained Nov. 6, 2003.
"To be honest, I don't care about these polls during the season," said Lady Vol Head Coach Angela Kelly. "It is not where you are, but where you end. This all means nothing if we don't take care of business in the upcoming weeks."
The Big Orange will look to 'take care of business' tomorrow evening, facing the Richmond Spiders. Richmond has struggled out of the gates posting a 1-3-1 record on the season, scoring just three goals in 2004. However, the Spiders have played some stiff competition, losing to Clemson and Ohio State University, both ranked in the Top-25.
Senior midfielder Meghan Ogilvie leads the Spiders with two goals on the season, while classmate Whitney Sikes tallied the other goal for Richmond. The Spiders are led by Head Coach Peter Albright, in his ninth season. Last year, Richmond finished 11-9-2, advancing to the Finals of the Atlantic-10 Conference tournament.
The Lady Vols and Spiders have met once before, with the Big Orange prevailing 2-0 on Sept. 12, 2003. Junior goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart earned the win in that match, posting two saves. The Tennessee net-minder has been highly decorated for her play this weekend, being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week, as well as being named to SoccerAmerica's Team of the Week.
Phillips-Bosshart recorded 14 saves, surrendering just one goal in 200 minutes of play, posting a 1-0-1 record at the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic this past weekend. The biggest highlight came by way of a double-overtime scoreless stalemate with the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels. UNC came in to Knoxville riding a 31-match winning streak, having not been shutout since 2002, Phillips-Bosshart ended both streaks, posting her 14th career shutout, and second of the season.
