KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer head basketball coach Pat Summitt announced today that assistant coach Greg Brown has decided to leave the program.
The 34-year old Brown, who just completed his first year as an assistant coach after serving as a graduate assistant in 2002-03 with the Lady Vols, is planning on returning to the high school ranks. Brown was hired full-time in April 2003 after longtime UT associate head coach Mickie DeMoss took the head coaching position at Kentucky.
"I appreciate the contributions Greg Brown has made to the program over the past two years. I wish Greg and his family all the best," said Summitt.
Brown, a native of Shepherdsille, Kentucky, was a student coach under Coach Don Meyer at David Lipscomb University from 1991-93. After graduation from Lipscomb with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1993, Brown entered the coaching ranks at Friendship Christian School in Lebanon, Tenn. While at FCS, Brown was a junior varsity coach in 1996-98 before a stint as Head Girls Varsity Coach form 1998-02.
Before joining the UT staff as a graduate assistant, Brown was a two-time District 8A Coach of the Year. Additionally, he led his Lady Commanders to three district championships, a region championship, made three sub-state appearances and nabbed one sub-state title. In 2002, Friendship posted a 31-3 mark in making it to the TSSAA State Tournament Quarter-Finals.
"I will always be thankful for the opportunity to coach at the University of Tennessee. It has been an outstanding experience for me both personally and professionally. It was a tough decision to make leaving the Lady Vols, but a unique situation opened up for me at Ezell-Harding in Nashville," said Brown.
Summitt said that a search for Brown's successor would begin immediately. In addition to his on-court duties, Brown assisted Lady Vol coach Holly Warlick with opponent scouting responsibilities and he served as the camp director of the Pat Head Summitt Basketball Camps.
