After leading Head Coach Judi Pavon's golf squad to its first NCAA Championship berth since 2000, sophomore Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico) was chosen as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week for the third time in her career, and second time this season, in a vote taken by the media relations staff.
At the NCAA East Regional, Retamoza tied former Lady Vol standout Young-A Yang's program record of six consecutive tournaments as the top UT scorer by tying for 15th place with a 224 (74-78-72). Additionally, her final round under-par effort moved her into a third-place tie with Yang for the most par-or-under rounds in a single season at eight. Retamoza continues to reel in Tina Schneeberger's second-place career mark of 18 with 14 par-or-under rounds of her own.
The standout is in the process of rewriting UT's record books as she already became the first Lady Vol to win two tourney titles last season with triumphs at the 2002 Auburn Tiger Derby and the 2002 Lady Kat Invitational. She also owns UT's standard for the lowest third-round total with a 67 in the 2002 Auburn Tiger. Also, Retamoza currently leads on the career stroke average list with a 74.30, which is ahead of Yang's mark of 74.37 set from 1998-2002.
