KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Rookie soccer forward Genna Gorman has been chosen as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week after registering a goal and two assists during Tennessee's run to the Southeastern Conference Tournament title match.
In UT's 2-0 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats in SEC opening round action, the Lakewood, Colo., native dished helpers on goals by senior Kayla Lockaby (Hamilton, Ohio) and freshman Emily Redberg (Brooklyn Park, Minn.). Against the Vanderbilt Commodores, Gorman tallied the third match-winning goal of her career at the 17:39 mark to down the Black and Gold, 1-0. The score resulted as Gorman attempted to cross the ball to Redberg in the box only to have it deflect off a VU player out in front and find the back of the net past Vanderbilt's diving All-SEC goalkeeper Tyler Griffin.
Gorman, the SEC Co-Freshman of the Year alongside South Carolina's Ashley Kirk, currently ranks second on the Lady Vol squad and is tied for the fourth-most points in UT history by a rookie with 20. Her seven goals trail only Lockaby's 10 scores for the team lead, while her eight assists tie sophomore midfielder Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) for tops on the squad. Gorman's eight helpers are currently the fourth-most by a freshman in Tennessee program history.
The rookie got her career off to an impressive start by scoring twice in her debut in the Orange & White. With Tennessee trailing the then-No. 15 Duke Blue Devils, 3-1, late in the 2004 season-opener, Gorman scored at 85:37 off assists from Christoph and freshman defender Erica Griffin (Memphis, Tenn.) to cut UT's deficit to one goal. Then with time winding down in regulation, she found the back of the net off a feed from Griffin at 88:04 to knot the score at 3-3. Senior defender Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind.) registered the eventual match-winner with a "golden goal" at 97:55 for the 4-3 victory.
The Lady Vols soccer squad opens its 2004 NCAA Tournament run by hosting First and Second Round action this weekend at the UT Soccer Complex. Tennessee (15-4-2, 10-1 SEC) will entertain the Furman Paladins (14-8) on Friday, Nov. 12, at 5:30 p.m. ET, while UAB and Wake Forest will battle at 8 p.m. Winners of the two contests will face-off on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m., with a berth in the Sweet 16 on the line.
