KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The list of accolades continues to accumulate for University of Tennessee soccer player Kayla Lockaby as the diminutive midfielder has been selected as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week based on her stellar performance last weekend during the Orange & White's important Southeastern Conference road victories over No. 8 Florida (2-1, 2OT) and South Carolina (3-1). On Monday, the senior also garnered her first SEC Player of the Week honor (Oct. 4).
In helping down the eighth-ranked Gators in Gainesville, Fla., to end UF's 36-match SEC home unbeaten skein, the Hamilton, Ohio, native registered an assist on senior Kristin McGrath's (Durango, Colo.) second-half goal at the 52:53 mark to knot the score at 1-1. She followed that by grabbing a loose rebound of an Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) shot and driving it into the back of the net past UF keeper Jen Gardner in sudden-victory double overtime (106:32) for the second "golden goal" of her four-year career. Lockaby also helped Tennessee defeat South Carolina, 3-1, to improve UT's conference mark to a program-best and SEC Eastern Division-leading 4-0.
By registering five goals in the Lady Vols' last five matches, including two tallies against UNLV (3-0) and a single score in wins over Mississippi State (3-0), Ole Miss (2-1) and Florida (2-1, 2OT), Lockaby has raced into the team scoring lead with five tallies. She is currently tied with Christoph for the top spot in points with 11 on five goals and an assist. On the all-time charts, Lockaby stands at seventh in Lady Vol history in goals scored with 21.
After playing five of its last six matches on the road, the Lady Vol soccer team welcomes a return to the friendly confines of the UT Soccer Complex (3-0-1 this season at home) this weekend to continue conference play against two SEC foes. The Arkansas Lady'Backs will matchup against the Orange & White on Friday night (10/8) at 7:00 p.m., before UT faces the LSU Tigers in a Sunday matinee (10/10) at 1 p.m. Live stats (Gametracker) will be available through utladyvols.com.
