UT PAIR REACHES DOUBLES FINAL AT FREEMAN MEMORIAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Tennessee Lady Vol pair of sophomore Sabita Maharaj and junior Ashley Robards registered their second upset win in the last two days, defeating 41st-ranked and fourth-seeded Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis of North Carolina, 9-7, in the Freeman Memorial Championships doubles semifinals on Sunday.
A day ealier, the UT duo took out No. 1 seeded Alice Barnes and Theresa Logar of Standord, 8-6, in the quarterfinals. Maharaj and Robards' impressive run, however, came to an end in the doubles final on Sunday, as they fell to 33rd-ranked and second-seeded Boglarka Berecz and Nina Suvak of Florida by an 8-4 count. The Orange and White tandem now has a 5-2 doubles record this season.
In doubles consolation play for the Lady Vols, freshman Blakeley Griffith and junior Majen Immink posted an 8-4 win over UNLV's Anne Claire Ortiz Luis and Claire Smith. In singles consolation play, Immink earned a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Georgia's Alexandra Smith, while sophomore Melissa Schaub cruised by UNLV's Lisa Lester, 6-1, 6-0.
After returning from Las Vegas, the Lady Vols will head north to battle No. 75 Indiana on Sat., Jan. 24 in Bloomington, Ind., and No. 48 Ohio State on Sun., Jan. 25 in Columbus, Ohio, in their first two dual matches of the year.
