LADY VOLS 11TH IN PRESEASON OMNI HOTELS COLLEGIATE TENNIS RANKINGS

The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis squad will open the 2003 season ranked No. 11 according to the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings, administered and released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) on Monday. Senior Vilmarie Castellvi, who entered last fall as the nation's top-ranked singles player, came in at No. 4 among the singles ranks and No. 22 in doubles with freshman Melissa Schaub. The tandem of freshman Sabita Maharaj and junior Tammy Encina were also ranked in doubles at No. 53.
Nine of the Orange and White's 21 opponents this season were ranked in the top 25, including five in the top 10. Topping the list was No. 2 Florida, followed by No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 North Carolina and No. 8 Vanderbilt. Other top 25 foes for the Lady Vols in 2003 include 14th-ranked Kentucky, No. 15 Wake Forest, No. 19 South Carolina and 22nd-rated Notre Dame.
Eleven of the 12 Southeastern Conference schools were rated among the top 75, with Mississippi State being the lone unranked institution. The five SEC schools ranked out of the top 25 were No. 32 Auburn, No. 36 Mississippi, No. 38 Alabama, No. 59 Louisiana State and No. 75 Arkansas.
The Lady Vols will compete individually at the 26th annual National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Jan. 17-19 in Las Vegas, Nev., before heading to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for their first dual match of the year against No. 62 Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. CT. Tennessee's first home contest is set for Jan. 26 when 37th-ranked Michigan visits Knoxville for a 1 p.m. showdown at UT Varsity Courts and Goodfriend Tennis Center.
