CASTELLVI ADVANCES AT NCAA SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS

After driving rain halted play during the opening day of the 2002 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship on Monday, University of Tennessee participants Alison Ojeda and Vilmarie Castellvi competed to mixed results on Tuesday at the Taube Tennis Center on the campus of Stanford University.
Castellvi opened her run at the title in fine fashion as she took a straight-set, 6-2, 6-3 triumph from Vanderbilt's Jenny Miller during the morning session. Her first round victory marked the first time a Lady Vol had advanced since 1995 when Melissa Zimpfer got past current Lady Vol Kim Gates' sister, Tiffany,(who played at Minnesota) for a berth into the second round. Later, the junior All-American advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 6-1, win over Houston's Sara Borwell.
Ojeda, on the other hand, closed-out her career at UT with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Stanford's Erin Burdett who is seeded 9-12 at the Championships. Ojeda leaves Tennessee as one of the most decorated Lady Vol tennis players in history. She recently became just the third Lady Vol to notch 100 singles and doubles triumphs in her career. The 2002 recipient of the Cissie Leary Award for leadership and sportsmanship earned All-American status a year ago and is a two-time All-Southeastern Conference honoree while also earning Academic All-SEC recognition three times.
Castellvi will meet Fresno State's Chloe Carlotti at 9 a.m. in the singles round of 16, while she and Agnes Wiski open play at 12 p.m. in the doubles portion of the tournament. Wiski and Castellvi will take on fifth seeded Marinova and Walker from UCLA.
