TENNESSEE STRUGGLES CONTINUE AT NCAA EAST REGIONAL
May 10, 2002 | Women's Golf
May 10, 2002
BATON ROUGE, La.
For the second straight day, the University of Tennessee women's golf team struggled with the par 72, 6,265-yard University Club Golf Course in Baton Rouge, the site of the NCAA East Regional. The Lady Vols fired a 306 during the second round to go along with their opening round 303 for a two-day score of 609. UT tied for 16th with Mississippi State. Duke leads the event after a second round 8-under 280 for a total of 571. Furman, Georgia and Tulane are tied for the eighth place, the last spot to advance the NCAA Championships, with 595.
As was the case the first day, none of the Orange and White shot under par and the lowest score was 75. The 3-over 75 was recorded by senior Young-A Yang (Tae-Gu City, South Korea) and when added to her first day 74 gives her a total of 149 and puts her in 36th place. Duke's Leigh Anne Hardin leads the event with a 138, after matching the course record with a 5-under 67 today. Freshman Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario) is two shots behind Yang in 53rd with a 151 (75-76). Sophomore Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) shot her second consecutive 77 and is 69th with a 154. Senior Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) and sophomore Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) are both tied for 77th with 156 (TS: 77-79; MF: 78-78).
By the time the Lady Vols tee off tomorrow during the final round, they will know what score they need to shoot in order to be one of the top eight teams that will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 22-25, in Auburn. Wash. The 14-stroke margin is a lot to make up but the team has the ability to do it, as they fired a 6-under 282 two weeks ago at the SEC Championships. If the team is unable to advance, Yang or Shepley could make the trek, as the next two individuals not attached to a team also earn a bid to nationals.
