KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Lady Vol senior golfer Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) has been named as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week for the period of March 4-11 by a vote of the media relations staff. Schneeberger won the award after an impressive performance last week at the Arizona Invitational.
Schneeberger entered the first tournament of the spring as UT's number one golfer and left with no doubters as she fired rounds of 69, 74 and 69 for a three-round total of 4-under 212. The 212 ties her with teammate Young-A Yang for the second lowest 54-hole total in school history, only three strokes behind the 209 fired by Katharina Larsson at the 1994 Southeastern Conference Championships. The two-time Academic All-American's two rounds of 69 also established a new career-low, as her previous best was a round of 70 at the 1999 Auburn Tiger-Derby Invitational. Overall, Schneeberger finished in second place behind 2001 National Player of the Year Lorena Ochoa of Arizona, who fired a 207.
So far this season, Schneeberger has a stroke average of 75.14, which is second on the team, one stroke behind Yang. She has finished among the top 10 in the last four events as she recorded an eighth-place showing at the Auburn Derby and a pair of ninth places at both the Capstone Intercollegiate and Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships. Career-wise, her average of 76.81 is good enough for sixth on the all-time list. Schneeberger is also second in rounds of par or better with 15 and is tied for fifth with 12 top-10 finishes.
The other nominees for the award were: junior Vilmarie Castellvi (Tennis), freshman Shyra Ely (Basketball), freshman Karla Marshall (Track), senior Monica Shannahan (Swimming) and senior Maria Torres (Softball).
