Head coach Judi Pavon and her fourth-ranked University of Tennessee Lady Vol golf team fired a 307 on the par 72, 5,996-yard University Club golf course and dropped to fifth place after day two of the Lady Gamecock Classic. The 307, coupled with the 295, carded on Friday gives UT a two-round total of 602. Duke leads the event with a 576 and Tennessee trails third-place South Carolina by seven strokes and fourth-place New Mexico by four shots.
All of the Lady Vol golfers turned in disappointing rounds, although senior All-American Young-A Yang (Tae-Gu City, South Korea) carded the best score with a 3-over 75. The 75 added to her 71 from the first round gives her a total of 146 and puts her in a four-way tie for fifth. She trails Duke's Niloufar Aazam-Zanganeh, who is 4-under with a 140 after rounds of 71 and 69. Freshman Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ont.) is two strokes behind Yang in tenth with a 148 after a second-round 77. Senior Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) jumped eight spots to 33rd with a 4-over 76 and has a total of 153. Sophomore Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) took the biggest stumble today as she fired an 81 five shots worse than her first-round score of 76. She is tied for 47th with a 157. Sophomore Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.) matched her opening round of score of 79 on day two and is tied for 50th with a 158. Playing as an individual, sophomore Ryan Kirk (Hixson, Tenn.) is in 81st with a 180.
The third and final round of the Lady Gamecock Classic will be played tomorrow with UT anxious to finish among the top three teams. Shortly after finishing its round, the Orange and White will hop on a plane and travel to Hawaii to play in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Tournament, March 19-20.
