Two sudden-death overtime sessions were not enough for South Carolina and Tennessee to settle their Southeastern Conference match on Sunday afternoon, resulting in a 1-1 deadlock at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium. In being extended to extra time for the second straight match, the 13th-ranked Lady Vols saw their record move to 10-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the SEC with their initial tie in seven years of league play. The Gamecocks are now 10-5-1 and an even 3-3-1 in conference action. Head Coach Angela Kelly's squad is now 1-3-1 in overtime in 2002.
Scoreless deep into the second half, UT junior forward Rhian Wilkinson (Baie d'Urfe, Quebec) put the visitors on the board at 70:22 when she beat Gamecock junior netminder Elise Matthews from eight yards out for her fifth score of the season. Sophomore Kayla Lockaby (Hamilton, Ohio) delivered a through ball down the left wing to her teammate, who dribbled past a Carolina defender before putting a shot into the back of the goal. The assist was Lockaby's fifth, tying her for fourth on the club's helper list with senior Jen Laughridge (Wilson, N.C.).
The Garnet and Black answered with the equalizer 4:09 later, when rookie Camille Toney came up the middle and notched her third score of the campaign from eight yards out. The goal developed when senior midfielder Melinda Carter arched a pass down the left wing to freshman Amanda Thurber, who angled a cross into the center of the pitch that her teammate corralled. From there, Toney split two players and slid a shot down low on the left side past Lady Vol senior keeper Ellen Dean (Memphis, Tenn.).
The teams battled back and forth through the end of regulation, with South Carolina's Carter having the best chance to snap the deadlock. Following a free kick on the right side, the 2001 second-team All-SEC performer drilled a shot from 20 yards out that Dean made a diving stab to contain. UT wound up with an 11-8 shot advantage through regulation, led by a couple of attempts from senior Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) and sophomore Lyndsey Patterson (Puyallup, Wash.).
During the initial 10-minute overtime period, Wilkinson was hauled down from behind on a breakaway in the penalty area by a USC defender, resulting in a controversial non-call. Instead, the striker was issued a yellow card for complaining to head referee Casey Black at 92:09. The Orange and White managed the lone shot in the first OT, an attempt by sophomore Kristin McGrath (Durango, Colo.) that was snared by Matthews.
The second extra stanza was more wide open with greater opportunities to score, as USC's Ashley Williams had the best chances at the Golden Goal. The sophomore forward slammed an attempt off the crossbar with 3:33 remaining in the match and then came agonizingly close to giving the Gamecocks the win when she pushed a shot wide to the left with just 39 ticks left on the clock.
The Lady Vols will head to the Magnolia State next weekend for encounters with Western Division rivals Mississippi State and Ole Miss. The Orange will tangle with the 2001 West co-champion Bulldogs at 3 p.m. CT on Friday before facing the Rebels on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT. In Friday night's action, MSU edged Vanderbilt, 2-1, while UM blanked Kentucky, 1-0.
