Before a season-high crowd of 1,178 fans at the UT Soccer Complex, the fifth largest in school history, the No. 13 Lady Vol soccer team rebounded from Friday's upset loss to Vanderbilt to deliver a 2-0 victory over Kentucky. Tennessee parlayed a pair of second-half goals and solid defense anchored by senior goalkeeper Ellen Dean (Memphis, Tenn.) into its fourth shutout of the campaign. UT improved to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the Southeastern Conference with the decision, while the Wildcats dropped their second straight match to fall to 7-6 and 2-3 in league play. The Orange also earned a measure of revenge after being eliminated in the opening round of the 2001 SEC Tournament by UK.
"This was a phenomenal ending to a tough stretch of games for us," said Tennessee assistant coach Samantha Baggett. "We asked a lot of our girls over the past two weeks and they responded well today. Kentucky came out and challenged us but our girls dug deep and found a way to win. I am very proud of their effort. As shown by both of our goals this afternoon, our team wanted to do whatever it took to put the ball in the back of the net. Keeley (Dowling) and Kim (Patrick) had great finishes. I'm very pleased with our defense for getting another shutout, they're really starting to come together."
Scoreless at the break, Tennessee held an 8-4 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes and seemed to control the majority of the action. After Lady Vol sophomore Kayla Lockaby (Hamilton, Ohio) was shaken up in the midfield, requiring a stoppage, the hosts were awarded a free kick from around 55 yards out. Junior Marie-Eve Nault (Trois-Rivieres, Quebec) arched a looping cross into the box that sophomore Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind.) headed into the upper left corner for the initial score of the match at 72:10. The goal was the second of the campaign for the All-SEC performer and came on Nault's second assist.
With 3:25 remaining in regulation, senior Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) provided the Big Orange with added insurance on her team-best 10th goal on a diving header. Sophomore midfielder Sue Flamini (Cranford, N.J.) sent a corner kick in from the right side that her teammate was able to slip past UK freshman keeper Liz Butler, who would record a career-high eight saves on the day. Flamini's helper was her fourth of the season and first since assisting on senior Tara Minnax's (Tampa, Fla.) Golden Goal that turned back visiting South Alabama on Sept. 20.
Tennessee wound up with a commanding 21-7 edge in shots, including a 13-3 disparity during the second frame. Both Patrick and junior Rhian Wilkinson (Baie d'Urfe, Quebec) managed four attempts apiece, while Dowling contributed three shots. The home team totaled eight corner kicks, compared to three for the 'Cats. Dean made three stops in picking up her second shutout in her last three starts.
The Lady Vols will play their next four league matchups away from the friendly confines of the UT Soccer Complex. UT will journey to Gainesville to face six-time defending league champion Florida (5-7-2/2-2-1 SEC) on Friday night before heading to Columbia to face South Carolina (10-4/3-2 SEC) on Sunday afternoon.
