Tennessee Soccer Captures First Tournament Title
September 09, 2001 | Soccer
On Sunday afternoon, the 21st-ranked Lady Vol soccer team used a balanced scoring attack to turn back Rutgers, 3-0, and claim the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational. The tournament championship marked the first for Tennessee in the program's six-year existence. With its second straight win, the Orange improved to 3-1 and equaled its best start after four matches. Freshman midfielder Sue Flamini of Cranford, N.J., was chosen as the event's Most Valuable Player after totaling six points on two goals and a pair of assists. "I'm happy with the result and with the mentality and character that we are developing as a unit," said head coach Angela Kelly. "I want Tennessee's signature to be a team that battles until the final whistle sounds, regardless of the score. Resiliency is what I see across the board and that makes me proud."
Junior Kim Patrick opened the scoring at 19:41 with her initial goal at UT following the forward's transfer from national champion North Carolina. After a free kick inside Rutgers' defensive zone, rookie Keeley Dowling served the ball just inside the 18 to Patrick. From there, the Pleasanton, Calif., native gained possession and connected on a shot that eluded keeper Christine Caldwell to the right. The helper was the second of the season for Dowling. Despite controlling the tempo and attempting 11 shots in the first half, compared to only four for the Scarlet Knights, the Lady Vols headed into halftime with a slim 1-0 lead. Things would stay that way until 5:25 remained in regulation, when Flamini banged a cross from Patrick into the net for her team-best third goal of 2001. The assist also marked Patrick's first as a Lady Vol.
Tennessee would strike again at 89:54, as sophomore Rhian Wilkinson sprinted down the right wing after taking a feed from junior Jen Laughridge. The All-SEC forward then angled a low shot to Caldwell's right for her second tally of the weekend. Lady Vol junior goalkeeper Cori Stevens made six saves to pick up her initial shutout, while Caldwell had eight stops for RU, which saw its record drop to 2-2. Tennessee finished with a season-high 25 shots, led by six from Dowling and four apiece by Flamini, Laughridge and Patrick. Midfielder Carli Lloyd contributed five of Rutgers' 10 attempts on goal. Kelly's club will host the fourth annual First Tennessee Bank Classic at the UT Soccer Complex next weekend. Vanderbilt meets Oregon at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, followed by the Lady Vols' 2001 home debut against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 8 p.m. The Panthers dealt the Orange and White a 3-0 loss at the Verizon Wireless Milwaukee Cup on Aug. 27, 2000. The match-ups will be reversed on Sunday, as Vandy battles UW-M at noon and UT takes on the Ducks at 2 p.m.
