TENNIS RECORDS 8 SINGLES VICTORIES AT ADIDAS INVITATIONAL

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team captured eight singles victories in the first day of action at the 2001 Adidas Tournament held at the Esmarelda Resort in Palm Springs, Calif.
Vilmarie Castellvi, Alison Ojeda, Kim Gates, Agnes Wiski, and Crystal Cleveland advanced to the second round with victories in the first round. Castellvi, Gates, Ojeda and Wiski all competed in the "A" singles draw while Cleveland along with Brooke Cordell, Ashley Robards, and Majen Immink saw action in the "B" singles draw.
Ojeda remained undefeated in fall tournament play by defeating Arizona State's Maury Brown, 6-2, 6-4. Castellvi handed Lia Jackson of Northwestern a 6-4, 6-1 setback before getting the better of UCLA's Katherine Hawley with a 7-5, 6-0 decision in the second round. Gates served Andrea Young of Northwestern a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 defeat before falling to UCLA's Sarah Walker in the second round. Wiski blanked the University of Portland's Amy Juppenlatz, 6-0, 6-0 before falling to Adria Engel of Northwestern.
Cleveland handed Sara Fritz-Krokow (UCLA) a 7-5, 6-4 loss to advance in the "B" draw, her second round match will be played on Saturday. After falling in the first round, Robards, Immink and Cordell all picked up consolation victories. Cordell defeated Northwestern's Wylie Chang, 6-2, 6-1, while Robards held off Olga Grozdenovic of Duke, 6-3, 6-3. Immink's triumph came over the Blue Devils' Hillary Adams.
Doubles action got under way as well with one Tennessee duo seeing action. Castellvi teamed with Wiski to defeat Florida's Alexis Gorden and Arizona State's Jennifer Baker, 8-4. The tournament continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
