KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Before a record crowd of 3,042 fans at the UT Soccer Complex on Wednesday night, #1 North Carolina used a pair of goals apiece from senior All-American Jena Kluegel and freshman Anne Morrell to turn back the 16th-ranked Lady Vols, 5-2. With the victory, the reigning national champion Tar Heels improved to a perfect 6-0, while Tennessee saw its mark fall to 4-3. Despite its second straight setback to an Atlantic Coast Conference foe, the Orange became the first team to score on UNC this season, as junior Kim Patrick converted a penalty kick at 74:09 and junior Jen Laughridge scored off a deflection at 87:44.
Sophomore Maggie Tomecka would put the visitors on the board at 6:12 with a header past a diving effort by Lady Vol junior goalkeeper Cori Stevens. Kluegel delivered a perfect cross pass from the right wing that her teammate popped in for her second tally of the campaign.
Kluegel would bang in a loose rebound at 16:18 for her second goal of the season to increase UNC's lead to 2-0. Only 1:01 later, Morrell would connect on a breakaway down the left side off a feed from sophomore Jordan Walker. North Carolina pushed out to a 4-0 cushion at 40:15 on Kluegel's second score of the night, a brilliant finish off an opportunity that was created by Tomecka and rookie Mary McDowell. Head coach Anson Dorrance's club would tack on another goal at 53:24, when Morrell deposited her second of the evening into the net off senior Anne Remy's fourth helper of the campaign.
Following a shot taken by Patrick around the 74-minute mark, UNC junior goalkeeper Jenni Branam was whistled for a foul inside of the box, resulting in a penalty kick. The Lady Vol junior forward, who transferred to UT from North Carolina in January 2001 after earning a pair of NCAA championship rings, then stepped up to the hash mark and powered a shot into the center of the net for her third goal of the season. Patrick's score was the first surrendered by the Tar Heels in 410:32, dating back to the final of the Women's College Cup last December.
The Orange and White would register another goal with just 2:16 remaining, as Laughridge's direct kick ricocheted off a Carolina defender and behind Branam. The score was the midfielder's second of 2001 and first since a 4-2 win at James Madison on Sept. 7.
The Tar Heels wound up out-shooting the hosts by a 15-12 margin, as the duo of Laughridge and Patrick chipped in with four shots apiece for the Lady Vols. Senior Kristin DePlatchett tended goal during the first half for Carolina and made three saves, while Branam had four saves and allowed two goals over the final 45 minutes. Stevens, the saves leader in the Southeastern Conference entering tonight's action, recorded six stops. In addition, UNC was whistled for 13 offside infractions, compared to two for Tennessee.
The Big Orange will now enjoy an eight-day layoff from competition before opening its nine-match Southeastern Conference slate next Friday night, Oct. 5, at Western Division foe Auburn. The Lady Vols have not faced the Tigers since notching a 5-1 victory in Knoxville on Sept. 10, 1999. Last season, UT compiled the second-best record in the league behind Florida with a 7-2 mark.
