The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team dominated its competition in the final day of action at the 2001 St. Mary's Health System Women's Tennis Classic on Sunday as Lady Vols won six of the eight singles flight championships.
In flight one, Tennessee seniors Alison Ojeda and Kim Gates played each other. Ojeda ran off the court with a 6-0 victory in the first set, but Gates rallied to force a tiebreaker in the second. Ojeda then squeaked out a 7-6 (3) win to take the flight championship.
Junior Vilmarie Castellvi defeated North Carolina's Kate Pinchbeck by the scores of 6-2 and 6-2 in the second flight, while senior Agnes Wiski was victorious in flight three, tallying a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 triumph over Kentucky's Sarah Witten. Junior Crystal Cleveland got the better of Kristen Koening, 6-3, 6-4, to take flight four. Cleveland is yet to drop a set in singles play this year. Sophomore Brooke Cordell used a 6-1, 6-3 decision over UNC's Lee Barios to capture the flight six championship and freshman Ashley Robards opened her colligate career by winning her flight (seven) with a 0-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over UNC's Kendall Cline.
The annual tournament featured teams from Furman, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Minnesota, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Purdue and Georgia Tech.
Up next, the Lady Vols will head to Palm Springs, Calif. for the Adidas Invitational from Sept. 28-30.
