KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Following a year in which the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team achieved their highest national ranking and notched the most victories in a single season, the squad has another accomplishment to celebrate as junior Alison Ojeda earned All-American status with an NCAA individual tournament seeding of 9-16.
Ojeda becomes the fourth Lady Vol tennis player to earn All-America honors as an individual, joining Michelle DePalmer (1981), Margie Lepsi (1995) and most recently Manisha Malhotra (1997). She is the first UT women's tennis player to earn All-America status since the doubles pairing of Malhotra and Lepsi accomplished the feat in 1998. The San Antonio, Texas, native played to a 27-16 record and was ranked No. 24 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's singles rankings heading into the NCAA Tournament (final ITA rankings will be released on June 1).
Ojeda is well on her way to becoming the most decorated Lady Vol tennis player in the program's 25-year history. An All-SEC first team selection in doubles this year, she has been the recipient of the SEC's Sportsmanship Award for three straight years and earned a USTA/ITA Sportsmanship Award in 2000. Additionally, Ojeda has earned Academic All-SEC recognition twice and was selected as the 2001 Southeast Region Cissie B. Leary Award winner for her leadership and sportsmanship on the court.
