Lady Gator Invitational: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3
Junior Young-A Yang ties for first only to lose in playoff
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Recording the best team total in school history with a 585, the sixth-ranked University of Tennessee women's golf team finished in third place at the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational. The Lady Vols shot a third-round 291 for the second time this season to finish behind Auburn and Georgia. The 291 ranks second all-time in school history, only one stroke behind the third round score set at the 1999 Arizona Wildcat Invitational. The team shot in the 290's in all three rounds for the first time this season, and have recorded sub-300 rounds in five of the last six rounds they have played.
Junior Young-A Yang (Tae-Gu City, South Korea) shot her second consecutive round under par and fourth in the last six rounds in finish the day in a three-way tie for first. Unfortunately, Yang was defeated in a playoff by Georgia's Summer Sirmons. She recorded a 4-under 68 on day three to match her career-low score which she recorded back in November at the GolfWorld/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational. Junior Tina Schneeberger (WR-Neustadt, Austria) recorded her second round of par or better on the season with a 71 to move into a tie for 14th place. In a tie for 29th place were freshman Tai Perry (Unionville, Penn.), who shot a third round 78 for a total of 227, and sophomore Erin Simmons (The Woodlands, Texas), who fired a 74. Junior Carrie Cole (Mansfield, Texas) matched her season-best total with a 229 to finish in a tie for 42nd. Playing as an individual, senior Anna Umemura (Honolulu, Hawaii) shot a season-low round of 75 to finish in 48th place.
The SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational marked the beginning of the 2001 season for the Big Orange. Head coach Judi Pavon's squad will take the next week off before heading to New Orleans to play in the Green Wave Women's Golf Classic March 5-6.
