After four overtimes and 150 minutes of action on Friday night, the Lady Vol soccer team and Duke University came down to penalty kicks in first-round NCAA Tournament action at Fetzer Field to see which club would advance to face top-ranked and defending national champion North Carolina on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils managed to connect on their first four attempts and used stellar goalkeeping by sophomore Thora Helgadottir en route to a 4-2 decision in penalty kicks. The match itself was tied, 1-1, but Duke (8-9-1) winds up moving on in the bracket thanks to the successful effort its kicks. Consequently, the Orange wind up its most successful campaign at 11-6-1 overall.
"Ever since my playing days, I hated to end a match on penalty kicks," said head coach Angela Kelly. "Both teams battled for the entire 150 minutes and should be commended for their efforts. Words cannot describe how proud I am of my young women. They have bigger hearts than anyone I have been associated with. Today I am extremely proud to be the head coach of the Lady Vols."
The format called for teams to choose five players to shoot in alternating fashion. Ironically, Helgadottir scored first against her counterpart, Lady Vol junior Cori Stevens. Freshman defender Lindsey Wiest then stepped up to the hash mark and banged a shot past Helgadottir to even the affair.
Duke senior midfielder Kasey Truman then tallied before sophomore defender Tracy Swibas' shot was thwarted by Helgadottir, leaving the count 2-1 in the Blue Devils' favor. DU rookie forward Casey McCluskey connected on her turn before Lady Vol freshman midfielder Keeley Dowling trimmed the deficit to 3-2 with a blast into the center of the goal.
After Blue Devil junior Carly Fuller went down low to beat Stevens to put her squad ahead, 4-2, sophomore midfielder Marie-Eve Nault's attempt was denied on the right side by Helgadottir, triggering a wild celebration by victorious Duke.
Seemingly hours before, Lady Vol junior forward Kim Patrick gave her team a 1-0 advantage at 8:22 on a feed from freshman midfielder Kayla Lockaby. The first-team All-SEC performer was making her first appearance back at Fetzer Field since she was a member of the Tar Heels in 1999 and 2000. The tally was her team-best 12th of the season.
The score would remain unchanged until 68:43, when Tennessee was whistled for a hand-ball infraction inside of the box, giving Duke a penalty kick. Fuller registered her fifth goal of 2001 to square the match at 1-1. From then on, the Lady Vols and Blue Devils could not crack each other's defense, resulting in the four 15-minute sudden-death sessions that could not produce any goals.
The statistics for the match stopped after 150 minutes, leaving UT with a 21-19 advantage in shots. Sophomore Rhian Wilkinson, who suffered a broken left foot against Clemson on Sept. 23, made her return to the lineup and gave Kelly's club several scoring chances and quality minutes. Dowling paced the Orange with six attempts, while Patrick chipped in with five shots. Fuller and senior forward Sarah Pickens had five shots apiece for Duke. Helgadottir had 10 saves, compared to eight for Stevens.
