DALLAS-- Tennessee?s Mario Toledo won his consolation final match Sunday at the Omni Hotels National Indoor Championships being held in Dallas.
Sunday?s consolation final became an SEC showdown as Toledo took on Mississippi State?s Romain Ambert, who was ranked as highly as No. 4 in the country a year ago. No. 16-ranked Toledo posted his fourth straight win with his 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 17-ranked Ambert. The win raised Toledo?s season record to 13-7.
?This is a great finish to the fall season for Mario (Toledo),? UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. ?This is one of the toughest tournaments of the year and the people in the consolation bracket here are better than most of the main draws at other events. This should be great for Mario?s confidence going into the spring and into this week?s professional event (USTA/UT Challenger) on campus.?
Handoyo Wins ATP Futures Doubles Tournament in Thailand
PATTAYA, Thailand-- Current Vol Peter Handoyo took home the doubles title at this week?s ATP Futures tournament in Pattaya, Thailand.
The Tennessee senior partnered with South Africa?s Raven Klaasen in what was Handoyo?s second futures doubles title of the season (Taipei, Aug. 5). Handoyo raised his world doubles ranking to No. 899 in the world this fall, but figures to climb in the rankings after this week?s win. Handoyo has also been playing well on the singles side this fall. He is currently ranked No. 682 in the world and advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles draw in Thailand this week before bowing out.
Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt cannot wait for the return of his valued senior saying ?his (Handoyo) play this fall has been an indication of his ability to come in here this spring and not only be a big player on our team, but to be one of the dominant players in college tennis as well.?
Handoyo is playing professional events this fall as an amateur to keep his college eligibility this spring.
